Zero tolerance for FGM: Reporting and speaking out against it

Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is one of the most important human rights issues of our time because it goes hand-in-hand with other gender equality issues, including child, early, and forced marriage, honour-based violence, and girls’ education. Talking about FGM opens up doors to wider discussions and can be a catalyst for change.

On the 10th episode of our radio programme, ‘Let’s talk FGM’, the guest, Dr. Mrs. Alaga Ayo Monsurat, the Head Local Govt. Administration, Lagelu local government stated that female Genital Mutilation has no health benefits for women but rather causes havoc. It is a culture, bad traditional practice that must be condemned. People still pushing for the practice do so in ignorance, as they do not know the negative effect of the practice. FGM can lead to the spread of HIV because the instruments used are not sterilized.

The practice is barbaric, animalistic and must be stopped. Excessive bleeding can lead to death during delivery or difficulties. Female Genital Mutilation appears as discrimination against women.

Alot of people are vulnerable hence the need for advocacies and information dissemination so everyone is aware that FGM is harmful and there are laws against the practice.
